32 CALIFORNIA GOLF NEWS • JUNE 2010 STANFORD MEN WIN The Cardinal take first at the Central Regional As the only representative of California schools at the Warren Golf Course in South Bend, Indiana, the Stanford Cardinal definitely left their mark. Leading all three days, the Cardinal beat second-place-finisher Florida State by four strokes and head into the NCAA finals. Three Stanford play- ers finished in the top 10 as individuals led by David Chung in fourth, Steve Ziegler in fifth and Sihwan Kim in sixth place. Medalist honors went to Drew Kittleson of Florida State. Stanford will look to capture their ninth national title at the Honors Course in Chattanooga, Tennessee, June 1-6. The Bruins also took care of busi- ness as the only California school in the East Regional at the Yale Course in New Haven, Connecticut, coming in third place by one stroke behind co-champions Texas and Kent State. This will be the eighth consecutive NCAA finals appearance for the Bruins, who took the national title in 2008. Freshman Mario Clemens and sophomore Alex Kim tied for eight indi- vidually leading the Bruins. Not faring as well repre- senting the Golden State were the Pepperdine Waves intheSouthCentralRegional at the Traditions Club in Bryan, Texas. Securely in fifth position with a 2-under team total after day two, the Waves unraveled with a 15-over final round that had three teams jump ahead of them in the final stand- ings. Andrew Putnam and Josh Anderson both tied for 17th individually for the Waves. The Waves have not advanced to the finals since 2006. Texas Tech won the team competition, with Georgia’s Russell Henley capturing medalist honors. The Cal-Bears advanced to the NCAA finals with a third-place finish in the Southwest Regional at Carlton Oaks Golf Club in Santee, California. They were led by Michael Weaver who shot a 1-over (217) total on the long 7,360-yard par-72 course. The story of the tournament goes to Cal- State Northridge junior Nick Delio, who was playing as an individual and took home medalist honors with a 3-under (213) total, besting Oregon’s Daniel Miernicki by a single stroke. Delio becomes the first Matador to advance to the NCAA finals since Cal- State Northridge began competing at the Division I level in 1991. Other California schools not advancing from this region included UC-Irvine and San Diego State, who finished in a tie for eighth. UC-Irvine’s John Chin also failed to advance as an individual fin- ishing in 10th place and marking the end of his great college career. USC and San Diego State both advanced from the West Regional at the Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton, Washington. However, both teams got a close look at a first- place Washington team that beat them by 29 and 30 shots, respectively, and landed the top three places individu- ally, including medalist Richard Lee. San Diego State’s Gunner Wiebe had a top-five finish with a solid 3-under total and USC’s Martin Trainer led the Trojans with a tie for 21st. Not advanc- ing was Fresno State who had a tough tournament, including Bhavik Patel who shot an opening-round 80 before recovering to finish tied for 24th.
